Hummm  Maryland needs Jobs, the State Needs Money, the people need cheap Natural Gas, People want to drill for the same in Maryland. Can you actually believe that Democrats in the House of Delegates say “NO”?  How utterly STUPID!   MD Democrats Propose Ban On Natural Gas  The Maryland House of Delegates is set to vote this week on an effort to restrict when the state may issue drilling permits to oil and gas companies. This is in response to an effort by natural gas producers to gain permission to access Marcellus Shale reserves from locations in Garrett and Allegany Counties.  Instead of embracing the jobs, revenue and clean energy that would be brought to Maryland via this drilling, Democrats are instead attempting to ban it, as environmentalists oppose the hydraulic fracturing process needed to harvest this gas.  Opposition to Natural Gas can be easily criticized; but this specific bill, when one considers those behind it, is simply ridiculous and mean-spirited.The ban is being pushed by Montgomery County Democrats, specifically Heather Mizeur, whose district is a 3+ hour drive from where the drilling would take place.  Delegates from Western Maryland want the drilling and Garrett County Republican Wendell Beitzel has even pushed for a bill that will force the state to grant companies drilling permits.  Delegates from Montgomery County appear to care little about the jobs, revenue and energy created by this industry.  They also currently enjoy the lowest unemployment rate in Maryland.  Western Maryland counties, however, currently suffer from some of the highest.    When I travelled across the state on the Murphy campaign, it was clear that those who suffer most from Maryland’s anti-business climate are those who live near bordering states.  In areas such as Western Maryland and the Eastern shore, businesses can relocate easily to neighboring states and few remain in Maryland.  Thus, as the above chart from 2010 shows, their unemployment rate is much higher.  In Allegany and Garrett Counties, which once enjoyed a strong presence from the steel and glass industries, the main economic driver is now tourism generated by Deep Creek Lake.  In Hagerstown, empty storefronts and struggling restaurants are the norm.  Democrats, via this new bill, are now attempting to ban Western Marylanders from using the few resources that cannot be relocated to Pennsylvania or West Virginia to generate jobs. It is absurd that Montgomery County feels the need to tell the people of Allegany and Garrett counties how to care for their own environment.  It is morally reprehensible for a County rich in federal jobs due to their proximity to the District of Columbia to force unemployment upon people who are not so lucky.  Montgomery County liberals need to realize that their radical, anti-business ideology is hurting the people of Maryland despite the fact that they cannot see it in their districts.  As a Montgomery County native, I can say from experience that one only needs to drive through downtown Silver Spring, Gaithersburg and Rockville to see that we have many “environmental” issues of our own.  I would ask Ms. Mizeur to focus on the environmental impacts of illegal immigration, crime and congestion on her own County before she asks Western Maryland to ban the hydraulic fracturing process. Don A.
