2012 Elections -- A Mixed Bag The 2012 Election was one of the more difficult for pro-lifers to swallow. A pro-abortion president was reelected and the Senate remains in hands of the pro-abortion majority. In Maryland, one of our two pro-life Congressmen was defeated in a gerrymandered district designed to oust him. Pro-life leader Congressman Andy Harris was reelected in Maryland's First Congressional District. Maryland Right to Life worked hard to educate Marylanders on the importance of life issues and the positions of candidates seeking public office on abortion, healthcare rationing, physician assisted suicide, and euthanasia. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, several other issues had captured the attention of Maryland voters. Nationally, we had some successes. The National Right to Life Political Action Committee was extremely active and helped elect or reelect numerous pro-life Congressman and Senators. The U.S. House remains strongly pro-life which will help block any attempts to pass pro-abortion legislation. Massachusetts defeated a law to legalize assisted suicide, blocking those who would threaten the elderly and medically vulnerable with a law which would put cultural pressure on them to end their lives and result in rationing of wanted healthcare. Montana ratified a law establishing parental notification for a minor seeking an abortion. Pro-life majorities at the state level were elected or reelected in several states holding state elections. The 2012 elections have increased the challenges we face as we continue to pursue rebuilding a public policy which reflects a culture of life. Ultimately, we will succeed. We have been through ups and downs before. MDRTL will not be deterred by the results of one election. We are alive and will continue to fight tooth and nail to protect the lives of those who are vulnerable. We are here to stay and will not surrender until all innocent human life is protected! Judge Does NOT Force A Woman with an Intellectual Disability to Have Abortion A judge in Nevada has ruled against forcing a woman with an intellectual disability to have an abortion against her will. The woman was born with fetal alcohol syndrome, yielding intellectual disabilities limited her to a mental and social level of a 6-year-old. She also has epilepsy. It is unknown who the father is, giving rise to concerns she was raped. Nevertheless, she wishes to carry the pregnancy to term and that decision is supported by her guardians (though she is over 18, she has guardians responsible for healthcare decisions due to disability). Six couples have already expressed strong interest in adopting the child once born. Despite the woman's desire to give birth, the Washaw County Social Services sued questioning the health impact on both the mother and her child. They argued for abortion to be forced upon her despite her desire. The judge sided with the woman and her guardians, and in favor of the life of the unborn child. Death of Mother in Northern Ireland Not A Justification for Permissive Abortion Despite recent media reports using pro-abortion talking points, the tragic death of a mother in Northern Ireland experiencing reported miscarriage symptoms and blood poisoning did not warrant an abortion. The skewed debate promoted by abortion advocates is similar to that of the recent U.S. Presidential election where abortion and manipulations of candidate positions were commonplace. Whereas abortion advocates in Northern Ireland and throughout Europe argue that an abortion could have saved the life of this mother, pro-life groups across the pond argue that such claims are political maneuvering and not real medicine. Abortion is usually illegal except in cases of a threat to the life of the mother in Northern Ireland. Pro-life groups like the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) argue that reasonable medical care could have saved her life and possibly her unborn child's all within the confines of current law. SPUC notes that an infection should be treated swiftly with antibiotics and stabilization of the patient. While not endorsing an action resulting in the death of the unborn child, SPUC notes the legality of providing medical care to save the life of the mother which may indirectly result in the death of the unborn child. Initiating the birthing process early in pregnancy, even well before an unborn child could survive outside of the womb with medical care, is legal in Northern Ireland to save the life of the mother in such extreme cases. Whereas an abortion intentionally ends the life of the unborn child in the womb, initiating birth is not a direct ending of life, and can result in both lives saved later in pregnancy. As medicine advances, the age at which prematurely born children can survive continues to be lowered.
