IT IS TIME TO BECOME SERIOUS ABOUT FIGHTING TERRORISM by COLONEL DONALD J. MYERS USMC (Ret) When one is in a war, the main goal is to win it. In fact, I will say that the only goal is to win it. There are no trophies for second place. We are at war, but far too many of our citizens do not want to accept that fact. In their view, if we would only be nice everything would be okay. They live in a dream world that never has existed. I believe that many of these people are the same ones who think that businesses should be open merely to provide jobs and that making a profit is immoral and evil. In their minds, everyone should be able to do whatever one wants as long as it makes them happy and does not harm others. I suspect that the only time that that occurred was in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, but even they had limits placed upon them, and when they violated those limits there were consequences. How many times must we be attacked before some of our citizens understand that there are evil people in the world who desire to destroy us? The latest attack was thwarted by alert citizens who prevented a plane from being destroyed and the death of hundreds of fellow passengers. This was not a criminal act, but rather an act of terrorism and should be treated as such. It was not "an isolated act" as described by our president but a planned act of terrorism. Our procedures did not work properly as reported by the Homeland Security boss Janet Napolitano and later retracted by her. This individual should have been treated as a terrorist not a criminal who received a lawyer and immediately shut up. Who trained him, who financed him, and who provided funds will now be almost impossible to learn. Now we will be subjected to more limits when we travel. Grandmothers in wheelchairs will continue to be checked randomly while those persons who have been involved with prior terrorist acts will receive no closer attention. That is stupid! We are more interested in being fair and not offending any particular group rather than being safer as we implement procedures. We plan to close Gitmo and move those prisoners to Illinois and think that the world will cheer. The senators from Illinois talk about the jobs that will be created and the boon to the local economy. Wow! I am really impressed. We are providing Miranda rights to captives in Afghanistan and think the world will cheer. I suspect that the world is laughing and our enemies are in stitches. They cannot believe how stupid and naive we are. I'm sure that our enemies know our rules of engagement better than we do and then they take full advantage of them. It seems obvious that far too many of our elected officials have no understanding of war and what it entails. Visiting the troops in the field does not make these officials aware of what combat is all about. I recall in Vietnam when we had a big battle and the "strap hangers" -staff pogues- would fly in for pictures. I recall on one occasion when the weather closed in and they could not get choppers in to fly them out. That was one long night for them. It is nice to think that war can be clean and good people will not be harmed, but that is for fairy tales, not reality. It is only in the recent past that combatants have even considered innocent lives. The country that has been the most aware and goes to extremes in that venue is the USA. We are now approaching the ridiculous and risking our own soldiers lives. It may not be politically correct to state it, but we are at war and the other side fully accepts that. They are doing everything in their power to win that war, and as a result we must do the same if we truly intend to survive. Predators do not attack the strong but go after the weak. We are presenting a posture of weakness and enemies throughout the world are taking notice and acting accordingly. North Korea, Iran, Russia, China, and Venezuela are countries that immediately come to mind.
