An Open Letter from The Conservative Union, David A. Keene, Chairman

To visit the American Conservative Union click here Dear David, As I sat down to write you this year end letter, I reflected on 2009. What a year it has been. I would like to think the highlight of the year was our wonderful CPAC gathering, the largest in our history, as conservative leaders gathered from all over the nation to discuss ideas. We had wall-to-wall coverage of radio host Rush Limbaugh's speech and a significant discussion on the future of conservatism with other speakers. I said at CPAC and in multiple press conferences and speeches, before and after CPAC, that Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the other liberals would overreach. Just as I predicted, Barack Obama with help from Pelosi, Reid and a building full of liberals like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Maxine Waters and others have sent our nation spiraling as they have pushed liberal priority on top of liberal priority. However, let me tell you some good news. If it had not been for you and other conservatives standing up - signing ACU petitions, making calls, responding to ACTION ALERTS - and fighting back it would have been much, much worse. You have made a difference. Now, as we begin a new year I want to ask you to continue making a difference for ACU and for all of work by supporting ACU or our foundation, ACUF, today. You and I can continue to make a difference next year. Usually at the end of the year I can say that the fights of the previous year are over. However, this year that is not true. The good news is that much of what Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the liberals have been fighting for has either been altered, slowed down or been gutted due to your support. As we enter 2010 there is a going to be a renewed push by national ultra-liberal special interests like MOVEON, Big Labor, ACORN and others to hold the liberal Democrats feet to the fire and try and force them to push through the entire liberal agenda. The all out, government-run health care public option is not dead. Conferees from the House and Senate can try to slip it back in during the negotiation over a final bill. Remember the final health care bill has not been passed. The House and Senate still have to reconcile their respective bills. The liberals are still pushing for a national Cap - and - Trade energy tax. They want to prove to the liberals activists they conspired with in Copenhagen that they can indeed make the American people fall in line through taxes and regulations, regardless of what it does to our economy. This bill has not been passed yet. And, there will be a renewed focus to fund ACORN going into the 2010 elections. We here at the ACU - with your help - will fight back. All of the polls indicate that the American people are coming our way. This should not be surprising as we have, together, been sending the news out about what is really happening in Washington, ...unfiltered using emails, without the spin of the more liberal national media. ACU wants to grow our ability to get the message out. As we enter this new year, Dennis Whitfield and the ACU team will be working to get even more news and information out to larger and larger groups of people. We have been encouraged by the tea party events and rallies on Capitol Hill that Americans want to take action. Now we are going to work to harness that energy. That is where ACU comes in. Our foundation, the ACUF, will continue to get the information out, on issues, so that people understand and are educated about the issues in Washington. We will continue to do that through publications, research and the annual ACU Ratings of Congress. Yesterday's Wall Street Journal is a study into just some of what we face in the year to come. Just consider some of the stories... Obama slams security breach, the headline read as the President tried to respond to the recent terrorist activity. He still refuses to use words like "war on terror" regularly as he seeks to appease foreign powers. And now we have learned that the Obama administration was aware of the terrorist from Nigeria. We must remain vigilant on foreign policy. Then there was a story on people who are terminally ill trying to stay alive a little longer just to avoid taxes on their children. That's right, those who are trying to avoid bigger Death Tax penalties are clinging to life to try and work around a Congressional provision so their children can keep some more of what they worked their entire lifetime to build - money on which they have already paid taxes. Why is our President and Congress still punishing those who work hard? We must keep fighting to end the Death Tax. An editorial about Obama's new nominee to run the TSA and his refusal to say whether he would push unionization for workers. At a time of heightened security at our airports, do we want big labor dictating how our nation's security should be run? ACU will continue to shine the light on big labor practices that harm our nation. Then there are stories leading into 2010 from conservative publications like HUMAN EVENTS that discuss the huge payoffs given to states of liberal Senators, using our tax money, to buy their votes for government-run health care. Another story in Human Events discusses the media's beginning narrative that Obama can recover in 2010, his poll numbers could rebound before the 2010 elections. What the liberal media forgets, however, is that you and I will be here to make sure the American people really knows the truth about Obama's liberal policies. I can't thank you enough for all you have done during 2009 ... signing petitions, financially supporting ACU, calling Senators and Representatives as we have sent Action Alerts, attending events as we have made you aware of them. Now, as we enter a new year we can feel renewed energy to fight back even harder. The polls are turning our way. There is a new election approaching that could change the outcome of issues for years to come. ACU will be there to fight on Capitol Hill, with your help. The ACUF will there to make sure we have the research necessary and a thorough understanding of issues to educate the public where needed. Together we can make a difference in the coming year.
