Here is the basis of this long held argument of Ronald Reagan. The Eleventh Commandment was a phrase used by former President of the United States Ronald Reagan during his 1966 campaign for Governor of California. The Commandment reads: "Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican." this excerpt was taken directly from wikipedia. Which is satisfactory for the basis for this discussion is not in dispute. He stated this during the long arduous battle fro Governor of California. I know the 11th Commandment, however, President Reagan didn't break it and yet he ran for President aggressively against Gerald Ford. And he attacked the policy direction and the leadership of President Ford. I would then only be able to glean from his own Campaign that he didn't subscribe to the exact doctrine which is herein described. However, I do believe that the principle of clean and fair debate, even cantankerous debate regarding the subject at hand without calling into question the opposing candidates motives, especially his patriotism, nor attacking him personally in any way is the core to the principle. For if it were not, then Mr Reagan would have trampled that which he cherished: The open, candid, debate in the public forum which we have as a great and noble nation placed at the number one element of our bill of rights, that which is freedom of speech. Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. As a person devoted to the protection of the Constitution President Reagan would always protect it, and everyone right to practice it. And further, as he ascribed to the Good Book as well, he would not condone the use of ad homonym attacks and gossip as these are not acceptable forms of debate. And as a person who had suffered brutal attacks in his prior races he learned the pain of them first hand.
